In the spring I engaged a Kon Mari consultant to assist me in "Tidying up" my home. Joy was at the heart of the process. Beginning with the premise that I was going to discard everything, I only kept things that sparked joy.
So I laid all my books out on the floor and then touched them. I didn't open them. I didn't read the cover blurbs. I just held each one for a moment. As I did so I asked myself "Does this spark joy?" If it did I kept it. If it didn't it was re-homed. At first it was hard to resist the urge to open books. But as I progressed I learned to sense if a book was sparking joy. And what had been piles of books became a useful library that I reach for on a daily basis. Ask the folks over in Creation Nation group what happens once a week when I pull a book at random from the shelf. But seriously I find myself using the books that I kept much more. The flamenco dancers are another item that are perhaps strange to find in a man's apartment. But for me they sparked joy. And for that reason the adorn the top of the bookshelf.
