Surgery booked soon

Surgery booked soon

Posted by Smalls555 on Feb 7, 2020 4:48 pm

Hi Everyone,
I was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma Jan 30th, though we're skipping the biopsy to save time before surgery. I have a 6cm tumor in my right kidney and it's causing significant pain. My surgery was just bumped up from Feb 20th to Feb 14th so it's happening super fast.
What kind of questions should I ask in my presurgical appointment?
Thanks!
Marie

Smalls555‍ Hi Marie

Good to hear your surgery was moved up, and it looks like that works for you as well.

Two resources I'd like to share with you from the Canadian Cancer Society: Kidney Cancer - Understanding your diagnosis and Questions to Ask When You Have Cancer will both assist you in understanding your situation and help frame and keep track of the Q & A during your consults.

Common questions we ask can include: How long will I be in hospital, will I need home care when I leave hospital / for how long, what do I need to monitor and look out for after surgery, who do I contact if I have questions or concerns after surgery, and I am sure you've got a list of your own as well.

Hope this helps get you started, its always best have your questions written down before the consults, and to have someone with you to help write down and keep track of the answers to your questions. Depending on the hospital, some provide electronic records you can have sent to you, or you may need to obtain the printed copies from the patient records department where you are been treated. Always good to have these to refer back to for future need or sharing as required. You might want to ask the specialist to walk you through the surgical and healing process - if you feel that works for you as well.

Keep well, and keep in touch with us here as your treatment progresses. Given the time frame, the consult must be coming up soon. Do you already have that date as well?

Welcome to cancerconnection.ca Smalls555‍
Your surgery date is coming up fast! How are you feeling about the surgery? Do you have support at home for while you recover?
I just had surgery in December on my shoulder (not cancer related). Thankfully my husband, a lung cancer survivor, was there to help me as even washing my hair was out of the question. Maybe you should ask your doctor what your recovery needs from surgery will be too?

Wow, I really dropped the ball on this thread, sorry! Surgery went well but 3 months later I went back under the knife to remove Mets from my skull so I'm recovering from that now. My diagnosis was updated to stage 4 renal cell carcinoma and I start immunotherapy next Wed. In the meantime I'm doing everything I can to boost my immune system naturally by eating healthy and getting exercise. Hopefully my body will handle it well!

Great to hear back from you Smalls555‍ . You have been through a lot since we last heard from you.

It's great to hear how well you are doing. If you could go back to the time of your first post what would you tell yourself?

Lacey :)
