Health Canada starts releasing protected drug and medical device data Social Sharing

Posted by ACH2015 on Mar 14, 2019 9:27 am

From CBC news March 13/19

"Drug and device clinical trial data to be posted on new Clinical Information Portal"

"Data about medical devices and drugs that used to be carefully guarded by Health Canada is starting to be posted online. The information includes clinical trials and other submissions provided by companies that Health Canada uses when it considers approving medications and medical devices.

Up until now, the full data was not publicly available and restricted to particular researchers.

In a news release, the department wrote: "Canadians want greater access to credible information that will enable them to make well-informed decisions about their health and that of their families."

It went on to state the move is one of the transparency measures introduced under Vanessa's Law, which was passed in 2014, and is supposed to protect Canadians from unsafe drugs".

A win/win situation for patients. Patient access to greater levels of information to weigh the pros and cons about procedures and treatment risks.

Everything we do has potential risks involved, and this access provides a source of reliable information to understand and know more before hand. Scary to think this took 5 years to put into effect, but glad to see it finally available to us.

ACH2015‍

This is great news, hopefully for anyone and everyone on this site who is wondering about a medication prescribed to them in the treatment of their cancer.
I've already bookmarked the Clinical Information Portal mentioned.

The portal is off to a modest start, as there are only two records posted of the thousands of drugs and devices approved for use in Canada. But once regulations are finalized on March 20, Health Canada promised data for all new drugs and devices approved will be posted

I am wondering if, on March 20, 2019, we'll see this "library" loaded up with information an ALL drugs and devices, or just new new ones that are approved on or after March 20.....

This may be a combination of requesting specific information about a product suggested by your specialist, as well as Health Canada providing a library of information they currently have on record and adding to a current database.

A step in the right direction.

" Dr. Nav Persaud is underwhelmed by the portal. "
"Persaud was involved in a years-long struggle with Health Canada to obtain clinical trial information ..."
Yes, ACH2015‍ , I really hope it will be a step in the right direction.
