Worried about lymphoma, did anyone have these symptoms?

Posted by teresa2222 on Aug 2, 2020 3:44 am

Hi I'm a 23year old female. Overall I'm pretty healthy but over the last year and a half I've been having some mysterious health issues which have seemed to just pile up on eachother with no answers. So it all started about a year and a half ago, I was 21 so I would drink fairly regularly (once a weekend or every second weekend). I was drinking to intoxication but I feel this isn't abnormal for my age until suddenly I started to have some major upper abdominal pains. It felt almost like contractions and I do have a child so I would gauge them around mid labour pain contractions with a very similar pain description. It was the middle of the week and I suddenly felt very sick and then the pains started and they were coming in waves much like contractions, it got so bad and went so long I was crying on the floor and had to have my sister drive me to the hospital. When I got there they tested to see if I was pregnant (negative). Then they gave me a 'pink lady' which is basically a super strong antacid, this did nothing but numb my mouth, then they gave me an injection of pain killers (unsure what kind) and this seemed to help. The doctor came in and asked me some basic questions including my drinking history, I told him and he chalked it up to really bad acid reflux gave me an antacid prescription told me to not drink for a while and sent me on my way. I followed his directions and didn't drink, the following week I had the same problem, attempted taking the antacid and it did nothing, again the pain persisted so long I had to go to the hospital where they again gave me the pink lady and when that didnt work they gave me pain killers. This time they said maybe its an ulcer and they prescribed me an ulcer antibiotic, along with that they prescribed me T3's just incase I had the pain again so I wouldn't necessarily need to come back they said take the prescription in full before coming back. I took these for a full month with a couple attacks in between. After the month went back same deal, this time they suspected maybe it could be my pancreas but instead of ultrasounding me they gave me a different ulcer medication, more T3's and sent me away. 4th time back same thing, pink lady, pain killers etc. Then the doctor said he was referring me for an ultrasound and the lab would call me. They never called so I called and they said they had no referral for me, called the hospital no referral on file. This all probably took about 9months, as I didn't want to go back so I just started toughing out the pain and taking T3's (I've been out for a while but a family member has chronic pain and does give me them when I need them, I know bad but my hospital experience has been horrible + COVID). In this time I was feeling extremely fatigued which I ignored because I am a single mom, I work 2 jobs and I'm in full time nursing school. Since last year I have been unable to drink alcohol without gettting violently ill, so I don't drink at all anymore but now even eating (anything, ive tried paleo, no gluten, no dairy.) meals sends me into pain and bloating in my upper abdomen. about 4.5 months ago now I developed a lump on my throat, I assumed I was getting sick but I never got sick and it never went away, it has slowly grown on the left side of my trachea for over four months and about 1.5months ago now I developed another painless swollen lymph node on the right side of my throat under my jaw. I went to the doctor and he said maybe its my thyroid, sent me for bloodwork which came back mostly okay except anemia, which they told me to take iron supplements for 2 months and then go for another blood test. I have an ultrasound of my throat scheduled for august 26th and my doctor mentioned the possibility of lymphoma (which I wish he hadnt). I'm just really wondering if anyone has had a similar experience of this kind of abdominal pain with lymphoma? It's one of those things where I have a gut feeling that something is really wrong sometimes my heart just starts racing violently when I'm laying in bed and standing up can cause shortness of breath. I'm really concerned and am wishing the ultrasound was sooner, please tell me about your experience because I have no idea what is going on or if this is indicative of lymphoma. I should also mention my temperature very randomly increases to a low grade fever. Any response is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi teresa2222‍
Big kudos for reaching out here, for being persistent in trying to get to the bottom of what you're experiencing, and (based on much of what you've described) for doing what seems like a good amount of research on what could possibly be lymphoma.

Too often we hear of Dr's dismissing ailments of the young because, well... they're young.  Don't let that be the reason you are not properly screened and assessed.

Take a deep breath and know you are doing the right thing by being relentless in getting the tests and engaging the doctors until YOU are satisfied that all has been done to properly rule out, or properly identify what's going on.

Let me introduce you to these members who may be able to offer some personal experience wisdom.
I believe there are also some groups and associations dedicated to lymphoma. Perhaps you could connect with them as well?

It sounds like you have so much on your plate with 2 jobs, school, and a child.
How old is your child?
Please find time for a little self love and self care. You deserve it.
And let us know what happens with the US.
(Tip: get copies of all your test and imaging results. You can even go back to the hospital and get the ones done previously.  This may be helpful when you see specialists. We think the docs all talk to each other and have easy access to all tests we undergo, but that is not the case. Sometimes you have to be the quarterback of communication and information in your healthcare.)

I noticed that you had your appointment with your doctor today. Do you have any information that you would like to share? The more information you can share, the easier it might be to help you find someone who has had a similar experience. While my cancer was breast cancer, I have experienced the frustration of not being able to get the right tests done in a timely manner. Eventually, in frustration, my surgeon in one city sent me to a hospital in another city, which was the only way I was able to get the tests I needed to finally get a diagnosis. Thank goodness she did.

Sometimes the best news is just to know what you are dealing with. I look forward to hearing from you.
