Is there any support to find housing? I am not looking for subsidized housing per say but we are in a situation where my parents sold their house and are temporarily staying with friends. I have spoken to the social worker but they didn't have any information beyond subsidized. We are ideally looking for a place to stay in Mississauga.

I’m not sure what kinds of support you need, Crys‍. You say your parent’s sold their house: what was the plan for that? Was the intention to invest their money and use it to pay rent? I think most apartment shopping is now done on-line, but to be honest, I don’t even know the names of any of the websites.

You might contact a real estate agent. Sometimes they know of rentals in the area.

Thanks Cynthia Mac‍ - they sold their house and were planning to purchase a home however with my dad having been diagnosed with incurable cancer they are now looking to rent as my mom is unable to care for herself and could not live independently following my father's passing. I have been in touch with a few realtors but I was not sure if there was any priority housing set aside for a unique circumstance like this - we did discuss with a social worker however the only support was for subsidized housing. I know in some provinces there have been references to lodging and other assistance but I am really looking for a home for my parents and I so that I can continue to caregive for them.

Hmm. Well, your parents are wise to be rethinking the original plan. I wish I had some resources to send your way... They might find something on Kijijii but you have to be SO careful that those listings aren’t a sham.

You might try the Ministry that looks after landlord tenant relations, or even a lawyer who specializes in that. Someone in their office might know of an agency that could help you.

And, you know, I would contact the agent who got the commission for listing their house. They should be able to afford a bit of their time to your cause...(but don’t get me started about that right now...) 😉

Your parents are lucky to have your support.

Would they be open to a retirement place that has varied assisted living options? You may find it helpful to call and speak to one of our Cancer Information Specialists to see if they have any resources to inform you of by calling 1-888-939-3333.

Wishing you all the best,
Lacey
