is there financial help in Ontario?

is there financial help in Ontario?

Posted by positivethoughts on Oct 8, 2019 12:10 pm

Im new here, 62 male and have had a radical prostatectomy 6 years ago this Dec, my psa has been going up but have been getting treatments/drugs to keep it at bay, all have failed, unfortunately as of last month it has gone to my bones now. I have not worked since getting cancer, I do get a monthly benefit from WSIB for an injury i had back in 96, and that basically covers my rent, i have no other income. due to my condition i cannot go back to work and am looking for any assisted financial benefits that might be out there, i am considering taking my CPP early and applying for it, but will need to talk with WSIB to see if i will be penalized from my monthly benefit. im not making ends meet at this point. If anyone can help, it would be gratefully appreciated

I have a couple of links to share with you

First is info on CPP Disability:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwic0JHQuo3lAhXImOAKHQ_NCa4QFjAAegQIBxAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.canada.ca%2Fen%2Fservices%2Fbenefits%2Fpublicpensions%2Fcpp%2Fcpp-disability-benefit.html&usg=AOvVaw0paH1NrlyAsz71j5ef1UCA

Next is info on the Disability Tax Credit, and the application form:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=13&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiSt9vJu43lAhXCnuAKHSq4BXYQFjAMegQIAhAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.canada.ca%2Fen%2Frevenue-agency%2Fservices%2Ftax%2Findividuals%2Fsegments%2Ftax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities%2Finformation-medical-practitioners%2Feligibility-criteria-disability-tax-credit.html&usg=AOvVaw0opPBfPxvWffF67zqxsF2o

You need to discuss these possibilities with your doctor (GP) and have their support and have them fill out the forms verifying you qualify.

Take a look at the criteria involved. These may assist in some tax relief and monthly income boost.

Call the CRA and ask if you would have any other disability pensions (WSIB etc...) deducted from any benefits you are applying for so you know up front.

FYI - also,

***If you qualify you may also be entitled to retroactive payments back to when your disability began.

Hello positivethoughts‍  and welcome to the site.
I am sorry to hear all that you are going through..
I want to direct you to our Cancer Information Service at 1-888-939-3333 who may be able to point you in the direction of some resources.
I noticed that you are in Ontario. Depending where in Ontario, there is an organization called Wellspring that has a Money Matters program that helps people fill out applications for financial aid programs that may be available.
They can be reached at https://wellspring.ca/
They do do some money matters courses online as well. Here is the link: https://wellspring.ca/london-region/programs/all-programs/money-matters-online/

Other than the financial situation, we also have a discussion group specifically for prostate and that can be found here: https://cancerconnection.ca/discussions/viewcategory/73

I wanted to introduce you to another new member who has also been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer - Marcell‍
